On Ongoing Camera Hunts

I’ve been looking for a DSLR for three years now. My last camera was a compromise due to the cost of a DSLR, in fact.

I don’t want a Canon. They’re moderately good cameras, yes, but I do not want to be associated with the same crowd that thinks that poorly-composed shadows overlaying eyeliner and faux-blood tears is a substitute for good photography. It’s entirely the “Rebel” line (and the “rebellious” daddy’s-money girls who buy it) that has made it so I will never own a Canon.

Likewise, I don’t want a Pentax due to the crowd that owns them.
Lack of retouching is not photography anymore, Pentaxers seem to avoid doing it.

In all actuality, I want a DSLR solely for the respect I’ll be able to garner with it that’s lacking now. No one moves aside for a point-and-shoot. Most of my technique is in my post-processing and concept, the equipment really doesn’t make much of a difference to my work.

I like my little Finepix F30. The only reason I’m making the purchase is to be taken more seriously. That I’m spending $1700 on something I don’t want for technical reasons makes me more than a little sad.

  1. I like your taste. Have you looked into the Nikons? I have a “measly” Nikon D40 and love the thing to pieces. Good color saturation and contrast, quick shooting, and lots and lots of control over the settings as well. Nikon’s camera bodies are fantastic, and their lenses can’t be beat!

Plus the Nikon crowd is not so bad ;)

  2. I was thinking the Nikon D40 is the next one to seriously investigate, it’s one of Flickr’s top non-Canons.
