Wan liao, the end, goodbye Avatar
Sun Jul 20, 12:02 | MediaRemember how, way back when, I listed one of the only things I look forward to?
Well, last night the series finale of Avatar: the Last Airbender ended.
It was an incredibly satisfying way to end a show, and it was thankful that it ended when it did. All too many shows keep going when they shouldn’t. Even Futurama, oh-so-satisfying in the original series, is taking a turn for the worse in Bender’s Game.
It was true to the characters, exciting and well-choreographed, and still left you on the edge of your seat even when you know Nickelodeon would never allow a non-happy ending.
I think, actually, that the recap-in-a-play episode just prior to the finale was better than the finale itself. The writers found a way to recap the story, point out their own flaws, and do it to the pinkest of ham possible. However, I have to say this is one of the finest animated TV shows to date, and recommend it to anyone.
This wasn’t a show about adventure. It wasn’t a show about kids having fun times in a magical land. It was a show about growing up and all the things that come with it – dealing with loss, love, responsibility, coming to realization of the self. And for a kids’ show, it handled talking about growing up in an incredibly grown up way.
I’m buying the box sets. And possibly an Appa plushie (the Momo one doesn’t look cushy enough). However, I’m hoping no one will try to continue the series – we’ve had our fun, and now it’s over. Letting it go is the best thing for it so as not to taint the greatness of what’s done.
